La Conner is a picturesque town best known for its art galleries and historic waterfront. A small trading post was converted to a bustling town in 1869 by John Conner, and a cabin from one of the early settlers Magnus Anderson has been preserved. Fishing, timber, hotels and the saloons of the early 1900?s have given way to restaurants, tourism, parks and marine activities. The town of La Conner has a population of less than 1,000.
Shelter Bay is a private resort community located on Swinomish Tribal Land. Although it has a La Conner mailing address, it is across the Rainbow Bridge on Fidalgo Island. Shelter Bay has waterfront homes, a marina, golf course, tennis courts?.
Some of the sights to see include the Museum of Northwest Art, The Firehouse Museum, the La Conner Quilt Museum, La Conner Sculpture Walk, Skagit County Historical Museum, the Bunnies by the Bay Museum, and the Gaches Museum. The most popular community events are the Smelt Derby and the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival which attracts thousands of tourists to the area. Make sure to stop at the produce farms to enjoy the fruits and vegetables of the fertile Skagit Valley.
